Plot summary
In a small Southern town, Jim Price becomes sheriff after defeating the white incumbent John Little in an election. Much of the community resents the result. Little, on his way out of office, offers the new sheriff almost no help, and Mayor Jeff Parks insists that Price consult him before making any decision. Two arrests sharpen the divide: John Braddock, a white man whose drunken driving killed a young girl, and George Harley, a black man accused of rape. Bengy Springer, one of Little's former deputies, beats Price's deputy, Bradford Wilkes. Braddock's father, a man of influence in the town, demands that his son be released and threatens to have him freed by force.

- Tick...Tick...Tick was made in and around Colusa, California, where the town's central courthouse square was remodeled to look like a town in the American South. The same courthouse was used for exterior shots in the 1962 film To Kill a Mockingbird.
