Plot summary
On a wartime bombing mission to Germany, the pilot Peter Churchman inadvertently destroys a French cathedral. To pay for its rebuilding, he and a crew of accomplices rob banks after the war. He settles in Pamplona, Spain, where he opens a successful restaurant and lives as a wealthy, respected citizen. Grace Harvey, another American expatriate, is his romantic partner. Angela Tresler, whom he knew during the war, arrives in the city and threatens to expose his criminal past unless he and his crew carry out a robbery for her at the Spanish National Bank of Pamplona. Churchman gives in and works out a plan for the job.
