Plot summary
The Bears finished second in the North Valley League a year earlier, and they have lost their coach, Morris Buttermaker, and their pitcher, Amanda Whurlitzer; Timmy Lupus is injured. The team is invited to play an exhibition at the Houston Astrodome against the Texas champion Houston Toros. Their star player, Kelly Leak, chooses to go along, hoping to find Mike Leak, the father who has been absent for nine years. Newly recruited pitcher Carmen Ronzonni struggles to find a style of his own instead of copying famous pitchers. With no coach, the boys arrange their own travel to Houston. When police find them in a hotel with no chaperone, Kelly asks his father to take over as coach, and Mike agrees.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The Astrodome chant "Let them play!" that coach Mike Leak leads in the film's climax echoed in real life: the crowd at the 2002 Major League Baseball All-Star Game used the same chant when it was announced the game would end in a tie if neither team scored.
- The Bears' stay at the "Houston Hilton" was faked: the real Houston Hilton stands at 6633 Travis Street in Houston, but the scene was shot at the Pasadena Hilton in Pasadena, California.
