Plot summary
In 1905 Mississippi, Boss McCaslin, head of the McCaslin family, owns a new Winton Flyer. Boon Hogganbeck takes the car, and Ned McCaslin takes it after him, which ends in a public fight. A magistrate lets the two men go, with Boss paying their bond, and sets terms: they must keep out of trouble and stay away from the car while he travels to a funeral. Boon ignores those terms and drives to Memphis to see Corrie, the woman he loves. He persuades his young friend Lucius to ride with him. Ned hides in the car as well, and Boon lets him join the trip.
