Plot summary
Mary Ann Robinson is a teenage student in New York City who lives in the Bronx with her mother and stepfather. She is raped while walking in a park close to her home. She destroys her clothing and washes away the evidence, and she tells her family nothing. She tries to continue her normal life, but she faints in the crush of a subway car, and the police bring her home, which upsets her mother. She leaves school and walks downtown to the Lower East Side, where she rents a room from a landlord. She takes a job in a five and ten store, and the other employees there dislike her. After they play a prank on her, she crosses the Manhattan Bridge, and Mike, a mechanic, stops her and offers her shelter and food.

- Composer Morton Feldman was originally commissioned to score Something Wild, but Jack Garfein reportedly dismissed his music with "My wife is being raped and you write celesta music?" and replaced him with Aaron Copland, who reused the film's themes in his 1964 Music for a Great City.
- While shooting Something Wild on the Lower East Side, director Jack Garfein talked residents on the block into playing themselves instead of using extras, and the Screen Actors Guild shut his production down for a day in response.
