Plot summary
David Clemens is a teenager whose fear of being touched is so extreme that he believes contact will kill him. His mother, who cares about appearances, enrolls him at a residential center for mentally ill young people, where he keeps to himself and studies clocks. Lisa Brandt, another patient, shifts between two personalities: one talks only in rhymes, while the other, Muriel, stays silent and writes her thoughts on paper. David talks to her in rhymes and the two become friends. He also grows close to Simon, a fellow resident, and begins to open up to Dr. Alan Swinford, the psychiatrist who runs the center.
