Plot summary
Katrin Hanson remembers her family's life in San Francisco in 1910. Her mother, Marta, stretches a weekly budget to feed four children and her husband, Lars, and to send their son Nels to high school. Marta's sister Trina arrives with the news that she will marry Peter Thorkelson, an undertaker, and asks Marta to tell their other sisters, Sigrid and Jenny. In the evenings the lodger, Jonathan Hyde, reads A Tale of Two Cities aloud, and the family listens, moved. When Marta's Uncle Chris visits with his housekeeper, Jessie Brown, he notices that Dagmar is ill and insists that she go to the hospital.

- George Stevens first offered the role of Mama to Greta Garbo, but she had retired from films six years earlier and turned it down. He then cast Irene Dunne, whom he had directed in Penny Serenade in 1941.
- I Remember Mama was the second of only four films to receive four acting Oscar nominations without a Best Picture nomination, following My Man Godfrey (1936) and preceding Othello (1965) and Doubt (2008).
- Irene Dunne was 50 when she played the family matriarch Marta Hanson, and because she still looked youthful she had to be aged with makeup to make the part convincing.
