Plot summary
The Rome Express leaves Paris for Rome carrying a mixed group of passengers. Zurta and his colleague Tony board just as the train pulls out, knowing that a man they want to see is aboard. Alistair McBain, a wealthy businessman, travels with Mills, his secretary. Asta Marvelle, an American film star weary of her fame, is on board with her publicist, Sam. A French police inspector and an adulterous couple travel too. McBain hears that a Van Dyck he once hoped to buy, later stolen, has not been recovered.

- Rome Express was the first film made at Lime Grove Studios in Shepherd's Bush, making it the studio's first production.
- Gaumont British's Isidore Ostrer later claimed Rome Express changed the studio's policy on making movies: it had aimed pictures at provincial customers and was unwilling to spend more than an average of $100,000 on a production.
- It was the first British film for Conrad Veidt, and Esther Ralston was imported from Hollywood for Rome Express.
- Screenwriter Sidney Gilliat went on to write several more films set on trains, among them Seven Sinners, The Lady Vanishes and Night Train to Munich.
