Plot summary
Becky Sharp is a socially ambitious young woman with no fortune, and she makes her way as a governess while looking for a place in English society. Her best friend Amelia Sedley gives her entry into an upper-class family and into wealthier company, and she praises any rich man who will listen. The Marquis of Steyne, Joseph Sedley, Rawdon Crawley and George Osborne, Amelia's husband, are among the gentlemen she tries to connect with. Poverty and class distinctions stand in her way, and her climb offends influential ladies such as Lady Bareacres. She keeps rising in British society while Napoleon's armies are on the march in Europe.

- Original director Lowell Sherman died in late December after contracting pneumonia from moving between the hot, massively lit Technicolor set and the cold winter outdoors. Rouben Mamoulian was immediately enlisted to take over, and Sherman's footage was retained.
- Becky Sharp was the first feature film to use the three-strip Technicolor process for the entirety of a film, a process that created a separate film register for each of the three primary colors.
- In 2019 the Library of Congress selected Becky Sharp for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
