Plot summary

Jean Valjean receives a ten-year sentence in the galleys for stealing a loaf to feed his sister's hungry family. He leaves prison with a yellow passport that draws suspicion everywhere, until a bishop offers him a meal and a bed. Valjean steals the bishop's silver; the bishop tells the police the silver was a gift, hands him two candlesticks, and urges a life of giving over taking. Years on, Valjean lives as Monsieur Madeleine, a factory owner and the town's mayor, while Inspector Javert, bound to the law, looks at him closely. Fantine loses her place at the factory after gossip about her child and falls into poverty; Madeleine promises to fetch her daughter Cosette from the inn where the girl is mistreated.
