Plot summary
Marko has searched for years for the entrance to a gold mine that was lost nearly twenty years earlier, when his partner died, a death some locals blame on him. To cover the cost of a prospecting expedition he takes on Ray Brighton, a bright young man, and together they find the mine. Marko decides he does not want to share the gold. Peggy is a young widow raising a baby; the town labels her a fallen woman, and Ray is attracted to her. Marko proposes marriage, telling her he misjudged her, and she accepts so her child will have security. He puts her to work at the mine and encourages her and Ray to spend time together.
