Plot summary
The Second World War begins, and men across France join the army or are called up. In 1940 the country is defeated, Marshal Philippe Pétain makes peace, and the troops are told to surrender. Instead of being sent back to their homes, a group of French soldiers is taken to a brutal prison camp. There Father Sebastian, a priest who served in the army, gives the men counsel, and most of them resist their jailers as well as they can. Duval, one of the prisoners, works with the Germans for an easier life and tries to bring Paul Duprez around to his way. Victor is another of the men held in the camp.
