Biography
Aunjanue Ellis is an American actress who began on the New York stage before building a career across film and television. Born in San Francisco and raised by her grandmother on a farm in Magnolia, Mississippi, she studied African-American studies at Brown University and trained in New York University's graduate acting program. Her professional debut came in a 1995 Broadway revival of The Tempest, and she soon moved to screen roles, including the film Girls Town and the ABC series High Incident. She appeared in films including Men of Honor (2000), Ray (2004), and The Birth of a Nation (2016). For King Richard (2021), she played Oracene Price and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, along with Golden Globe and British Academy Film Awards nominations. Later credits include If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) and The Color Purple (2023). On television, she was nominated for Primetime Emmy Awards for When They See Us and Lovecraft Country.

Ellis had a lead role in The Divide, a 2013 AMC pilot. After WE tv picked up the show, she left and Nia Long took over the part.
