Plot summary
Perry Williams, a Black art student, lives in a Columbia University dormitory after his parents learn he is gay and put him out of the house. Another student pursues him, but the white man says something Perry considers racist, and Perry breaks it off. At loose ends, he gets to know Bruce, an old man with little money, and learns that Bruce was a writer in the Harlem Renaissance. Bruce speaks of the friends of his youth, among them Langston Hughes, Aaron Douglas, Wallace Thurman and Zora Neale Hurston, and of the hostility a young gay Black writer met in the 1920s.

- Rodney Evans's screenplay for Brother to Brother won the Independent Feature Project's Gordon Parks Award for Screenwriting, and he also received production funding from the Jerome Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation and ITVS.
- The film was inspired by a 1991 anthology, Brother to Brother: New Writing by Black Gay Men, whose editing Joseph Beam began and Essex Hemphill finished after Beam died in 1988.
