Plot summary
Celie Harris is a teenager in Georgia in the early 1900s, living with her sister Nettie and their father Alfonso. After their mother dies, Alfonso abuses Celie, and the two babies she bears are taken from her soon after birth. Alfonso then gives her in marriage to a local farmer with three children, Albert Johnson, known as Mister. When Alfonso turns on Nettie, she takes shelter at Mister's farmhouse to stay near her sister, and he drives her off his land. She promises Celie a letter every day.
