Plot summary
Her opinion sought after the killing of Trayvon Martin, Isabel Wilkerson looks past race for what makes one group set itself above another. In India she examines a caste order that ranks people of a single race; in Nazi Germany she sees Jews of European descent defined as an inferior race, and she argues with friends over slavery and the Holocaust, subjugation against extermination. Alongside her research run the stories of Allison Davis and Elizabeth Davis, black researchers who went undercover with a white couple to study segregation in the American South, and of a Gentile member of the Nazi party in love with a Jewish woman. Through it all she carries her own grief and keeps writing on caste.
