Plot summary
Romulus Ledbetter once played piano at Juilliard and had a family; paranoid schizophrenia now keeps him in a cave in Inwood Park, in a New York he believes is run by Cornelius Gould Stuyvesant, who sends controlling rays from the Chrysler Building. Moth-like seraphs fill his head. On Valentine's Day he finds Scotty Gates frozen in a tree outside the cave. The police, his daughter Lulu among them, treat the death as an accident. A homeless person who had once been Scotty's lover says the photographer David Leppenraub murdered him. Driven by images of his wife as she was when young, Romulus turns to a former friend for an invitation to play his own composition at Leppenraub's farm.
