Plot summary
Captain John Castle of Charlie Company, 324th Engineering Battalion, takes his men to block a vital road during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, keeping the 1st SS Panzer Division from American fuel depots while the company withdraws. Machine gun fire and a passing SS half-track crew wipe out the squad; Castle, wounded, is the only one left. His mission done, he heads on foot for friendly lines at Elsenborn with a field radio he calls Lassie and his pack of Lucky Strike cigarettes, hiding from SS units in the countryside.

- Lucky Strike grew out of an event in co-writer Marc Frydman's life: as a 16-year-old in France he interviewed a Battle of the Bulge veteran for a school project, and the script was rewritten repeatedly over the next 50 years before it was filmed.
- Director Rod Lurie had the opening scene of Lucky Strike converted to black-and-white after it was shot, because he felt that would reflect public perception of how the war is remembered.
