Plot summary
Tish Rivers and Fonny Hunt grew up as friends in New York and become lovers. In the 1970s the two look for a place of their own, but landlords will not rent to a Black couple, until Levy rents them a loft in a warehouse. A man harasses Tish in a grocery store and Fonny forces him out; Officer Bell arrives and threatens Fonny with arrest until the store's proprietor vouches for the couple. Fonny is later charged with raping Victoria Rogers, who picks him from a lineup, and Bell says he saw Fonny leave the scene. Fonny's friend Daniel Carty was with him then, but the alibi is called unreliable. Tish visits Fonny in jail with news of her pregnancy, and her mother Sharon and the rest of the family take up his cause.
