Plot summary
Ebony Jackson, a single mother of three, has moved her family into a new house, their third relocation in a short time, and her mother Alberta, who has cancer, has joined them. Ebony carries a criminal record and a history of drinking, and Child Protective Services has assigned the caseworker Cynthia to supervise the household. Dre, the youngest child, speaks of an unseen presence called Tre that he says lives in the basement and the bedroom closet. A dead cat and a hole in the concrete floor appear below. Nate and Shante begin behaving strangely, and a woman watches the house from a parked car.
