Plot summary
Jeffrey Cole finishes at the Cincinnati police academy with one ambition: undercover work. He gets an assignment the day he graduates and is handed the case of Dwayne Gittens, a crack dealer whose operations stretch across the state and whose street name is God. Cole invents a second identity, a dealer called J. Reid from Akron, Ohio, and has to show standing on the streets before Gittens' people make room for him. Gittens is a man of the people in his own neighborhood, a family man who helps those who need it, and also the head of a criminal empire that answers to him alone.

- The film is based on a true story from Boston. The dealer at the center of it was found guilty and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole plus 240 years to run concurrently, and he later died in prison in 2026, at the age of 71.
- The hip hop soundtrack that Columbia Records released on 24 August 1999 alongside the film carried 50 Cent's debut single, 'How to Rob'.
- In 2008 Christopher Young personally rearranged his score into a promotional album that he produced himself, saying of the result: 'At long last I think I can finally live with this score.'
