Plot summary
In Plainview, Indiana, Odette, Clarice and Barbara Jean became friends as teenagers in the late 1960s, after Odette and Clarice brought Barbara Jean, whose mother had died and whose father drank, to Earl's All-You-Can-Eat. Big Earl, who ran the Black-owned diner with his wife Mama Millie, gave her a job, a place to stay and a second family, and nicknamed the three of them the Supremes. Clarice, a gifted pianist, gave up her plan to study at Juilliard to marry Richmond, the high school football star; Odette married his best friend James; and Barbara Jean fell in love with Ray, a young white man the town's prejudice drove away. Thirty years later, Odette and James are still married, and the friends keep their standing date at Earl's.
