Plot summary
Late in the 18th century, Emma Hart comes from a humble background and is thought vulgar by the British aristocracy, though her beauty captivates them. Her lover, Charles Greville, who employs her mother, sends her to Naples under a pretense, into the household of his uncle, Sir William Hamilton, to be schooled as a lady. She instead becomes Sir William's wife, a match of convenience. Then Horatio Nelson of the British navy enters her life, and their attachment raises the greatest difficulty, since both of them are married to other people. Her help serves Nelson's fleet in the war against Napoleon, while public opinion weighs on them both.
