Plot summary
Mark Brady prosecutes the men the state sends him, and Robert Graham is one of them, a young man convicted of manslaughter after a drunken fight and sentenced to ten years. Six of those years pass in the prison jute mill, which hardens the polite inmate who arrived there. Brady becomes the warden, a post he means to use as a step toward the governor's office, and the prison doctor warns that the mill is doing lasting damage to Graham's mind. Brady takes him off it and makes him his valet, a change Graham takes to, especially the company of the warden's daughter, Mary.
