Plot summary
In 1862, a Union Army regiment, the 304th New York Infantry, is camped in Virginia near the Rappahannock River. The men receive orders to move upriver and engage a sizable Confederate force. Private Henry Fleming declares to his comrades that death holds no fear for him, yet as the hour of battle nears he grows pensive. On sentry duty he trades words across the river with a Confederate soldier he cannot see, who warns him to beware of the red badge, the name the soldiers give a battle wound. His friend Tom Wilson urges him to leave his watch with his parents should he be killed.
