Springtime in the Sierras (1947) on Netflix

Plot summary

Roy Rogers and his men find a fawn wandering the range and carry it to Cap Foster, a retired army captain who cares for orphaned animals. Foster shows them the fawn's mother, mortally wounded by hunters. A gang has been shooting deer out of season, he says, nearly wiping out the local herds and selling the meat across the country. Roy has come to Jean Loring's Lazy W Ranch to sell horses, and Jean introduces her foreman, Matt Wilkes. Taffy Baker says her brother Bert now spends all his time with Jean, which troubles her. Riding out with Taffy the next morning, Roy finds a spent shell from a high-powered rifle and sees a buck flee. He chases a hunter on an R-branded horse, but the rider reaches a river and is gone.
