Plot summary
Mary works as a telephone operator in New York City and lives by herself. Jim is a factory hand who also lives alone and feels cut off from the world around him. Over the Independence Day weekend both finish their Saturday half-day shifts and set out for Coney Island on their own. They board the same bus and notice each other, and they meet again on the beach. Jim helps Mary when a ring she is wearing goes missing, and she tells him it belonged to her mother. As night falls they stay on, visiting a fortune teller and riding the rides of the amusement park, until a panic among the crowd pulls them apart.
