Plot summary
For two decades Simplicia has led St. Francis Academy, and her views have stayed traditional. Sister George arrived at the school not long ago, and her outlook is nearer that of the teenage girls than the other nuns' is. She wants the students to attend a multi-faith youth rally in Santa Barbara, California, a journey of three thousand miles, and the Bishop, who wants the academy to keep up with the times, approves the trip for a chosen group of girls and their sister chaperones. Rosabelle, bright but undisciplined, and her best friend Marvel Ann, who follows where Rosabelle leads, fail to meet the criteria, yet both find a way onto the trip. Simplicia and Sister George differ over how faith should be expressed and over what the church should be in the modern world.
