Plot summary
John 'Ghost' Wakefield leads a struggling jazz band and refuses to compromise his music, preferring to play outdoors for birds. At a party he meets Jess Polanski, a singer who is involved with his agent, Benny Flowers. At Ghost's insistence, Jess joins the band, and the two begin a relationship, angering Benny. Benny arranges for the band to cut a record.

- In a 1971 Playboy interview, John Cassavetes regretted giving in to studio pressure and shooting Too Late Blues in California instead of New York in only 30 days, rather than the six months he felt it needed.
- Too Late Blues was the first film John Cassavetes made for a major Hollywood studio, Paramount, and the first time Bobby Darin took a role that did not require him to sing.
- Cassavetes wanted Montgomery Clift and his wife, frequent leading lady Gena Rowlands, for the film's main roles, and the production of Too Late Blues was rushed.
- Making Too Late Blues was less traumatic for Cassavetes than A Child Is Waiting (1963), his other early studio film, which was taken away from him during editing.
