Plot summary
Craig Howard is an unpublished writer and Samantha is a school teacher; the couple lives in New York City and wants a child more than anything. Their hope gives way when doctors find that Samantha cannot conceive, and the care that might help costs far more than the two of them can pay. Then a new and barely known place, the Spiritus Research Clinic in the small town of Lakeview, two hours away, offers them free treatment, and the Howards move there. At a party Craig meets the publisher Earl Sidney, who wants to bring out Craig's book and offers an advance of one hundred thousand dollars. The treatment brings news: Samantha is pregnant with twins.

- David Hemmings suffered a heart attack and was pronounced dead on the scene during filming, according to his agent Liz Nelson, who said he had just finished his final shots of the day. Because he died before post-production, his ADR was recorded by impressionist Rory Bremner, and the film was dedicated to his memory.
