Plot summary
Hazzard County is holding a reunion festival, and Uncle Jesse is organizing it. Mama Josephine Maxx has sued for access across Duke land to the Hazzard swamp, where she intends to build a theme park, and Jesse refused so the swamp would not be destroyed. Residents are angry, since the park means jobs and revenue. Cooter Davenport, now a congressman, arrives from Washington. Bo returns from the racing circuit, Daisy has been at graduate school getting a PhD in ecology, and Luke is a forestry service smokejumper. Rosco, the sheriff, inherited Boss Hogg's empire. An overland car race will settle her claim.

- Denver Pyle had lost weight, had short hair and was clean shaven when filming began, so the film gave him a "fat suit" like the one Sorrell Booke wore as Boss Hogg, a scruffy white wig under his red cap and a false white beard applied with spirit gum.
- Waylon Jennings did not return as "The Balladeer" and his "Good Ol' Boys" theme was dropped for the reunion film: country singer Don Williams narrated instead, and stars Tom Wopat and John Schneider created a new opening song.
- Series creator Gy Waldron had written a version of the reunion script as early as 1988, three years after The Dukes of Hazzard ended, and for the 1997 film he updated that old pitch to the passing of time and to write around Sorrell Booke's 1994 death.
- Cooter Davenport is portrayed as a United States Congressman in the film, echoing actor Ben Jones, who played him and had himself served as a Democratic congressman from Georgia from 1989 to 1993.
