Henry Gibson
Biography
Henry Gibson, born James Bateman, was an American performer who worked as an actor, a comedian and a poet. Born in Germantown, Philadelphia, he started acting as a child in touring theater productions and got his break when Jerry Lewis cast him in The Nutty Professor (1963). From 1968 to 1971 he was a cast member of Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, reciting poems as The Poet and earning a Golden Globe nomination in 1971. He voiced Wilbur the pig in Charlotte's Web (1973) and played Haven Hamilton in Robert Altman's Nashville (1975), a role that won him the National Society of Film Critics award. Later film roles included the Illinois Nazi leader in The Blues Brothers (1980), the villain in The 'Burbs (1989) and Father O'Neil in Wedding Crashers (2005), and his last major television part was Judge Clark Brown on Boston Legal from 2004 to 2008.

Gibson's stage name was a same-sounding phrase for Henrik Ibsen, the Norwegian dramatist, and he also used the name Olsen Gibson.
First role
Gibson began acting when he was 8 years old. He spent nine years touring as a performer with the Mae Desmond Theatre.
Big break
Jerry Lewis, guest-hosting Tonight Starring Jack Paar in 1962, was charmed by Gibson and cast him in The Nutty Professor, after which his career took off.
Beyond film
In 1962 Gibson made a comedy album called Alligator for Liberty Records. It came out again in 1968 as ...by Henry Gibson after his Laugh-In success, and neither release made the Billboard Top 200.
