Plot summary
Melody Parris works the perfume counter of a Seattle department store and feels her life has stalled: her boyfriend George will not commit, and the job as head of the department goes to a younger co-worker. Her best friend Naomi suggests she make a Christmas list just for fun, and Naomi slips it into the store's Santa mailbox. Small items from the list begin to turn up. Melody also meets Danny Skyler, a boy who wants a perfume like the one his late mother wore, and she lends him the money he is short; he adds her name to his sweepstakes entry, and Danny and Melody win a Mustang convertible. Danny's father, Dr. David Skyler, comes to the drawing, and the car gives Melody and David reasons to keep meeting.

- The Christmas List opens with a holiday vocal version of "A Time For Tony", written in 1963 by Merv Griffin, the film's executive producer. Under its alternate title "Think!" it has been the Jeopardy! final-round music since the show's 1964 premiere and its theme song since 1984.
- Near the end of The Christmas List, two children watch television and the theme to Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation plays; that show was also produced by Shavick Entertainment and Saban Entertainment. Because Haim Saban and Shuki Levy of Saban owned the theme, no royalties had to be paid to use it.
- The Christmas List wrapped shooting on October 31, 1997 and premiered on December 1, only 31 days later, giving it a shorter than usual post-production.
