Plot summary
Richard Clark, a struggling reporter in San Francisco, learns from his rival coworker Scoop Johnson that three people have been found dead in their closets in Chestnut Hills, California. He sees the case as his chance at a breakthrough and travels there to investigate, meeting Diane Bennett, a local biology teacher, and her young son, known as Professor. With Sheriff Sam Ketchem, Richard looks into the deaths. He finds a large claw on the ground and shows it to Diane, who asks her colleague Dr. Pennyworth to examine it. Richard goes to Diane's house for dinner with her, Professor, Dr. Pennyworth and her priest brother, Father Finnegan.
