Plot summary

Arnold Dwellyn is dead, and his body is never buried. His will keeps it in the family mansion, and it makes Karen, his lover, his bride after the fact, so that she can inherit the estate. She has to stay beside the coffin to keep the money. Robert, Arnold's younger brother, Lady Jocelyn Dwellyn, his widow, and Douglas Whitehead, a cousin who handles his legal affairs, all want the arrangement undone and a sum of cash hidden on the estate found. Hester, Arnold's sister, is the only one who accepts it. The deaths that follow bring the local constable, Hooke, to the house.
