Paulette Goddard
Biography
Paulette Goddard was an American actress who became a leading star during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Born in Queens, New York, and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, she first worked as a child fashion model and later performed on Broadway in Ziegfeld productions. After moving to Hollywood in the early 1930s, she made her first credited screen appearance as Charlie Chaplin's leading lady in Modern Times (1936), and she also appeared in his The Great Dictator (1940). She signed with Paramount Pictures and made The Cat and the Canary (1939), The Women (1939), North West Mounted Police (1940), Hold Back the Dawn (1941), Reap the Wild Wind (1942), and So Proudly We Hail (1943), which brought her a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Academy Awards. Other films included The Diary of a Chambermaid (1946) and Unconquered (1947). She later worked freelance and on television, and she largely retired from acting. She died in 1990.

A role that slipped away
Selznick was pleased with Goddard's work in a film and thought hard about casting her as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind. By December 1938 he had narrowed the choice to Goddard and Vivien Leigh, who got the role after the two did the only Technicolor screen tests for it.
First role
Goddard made her stage debut in 1926 as a dancer in Florenz Ziegfeld's summer revue No Foolin', performing under the name Paulette Goddard.
Big break
Chaplin sent Goddard to acting teacher Neely Dickson at the Hollywood Community Theater for polish. He then cast her as his leading lady in Modern Times, a box office hit that marked a turning point in her career.
