Plot summary
Eddie delivers goods around West Rome, Oklahoma, and counts himself an expert on ancient Roman history. He complains that scheming politicians are about to wipe out the local shanty community and insists nothing of the kind could have happened in Rome's golden days. A blow to the head puts him in Imperial Rome, where he is sold at a slave auction to the good-natured tribune Josephus. There Eddie finds the emperor Valerius as much a grafter as the men back home, and the empress Agrippa, wife to Valerius, keeps trying to poison her husband. Eddie takes a post as the emperor's food taster and tries to help Josephus with the captured Princess Sylvia.
