Plot summary
Cyrus Norman died ten years ago, and his executor, Crosby, is paddled through alligator-filled water to the mansion in the Louisiana bayous, arriving at midnight to read the will. There he meets Miss Lu, who keeps a large black cat. Norman's surviving relatives have also come: Joyce Norman, Fred Blythe, Charles Wilder, Cicily Young, Aunt Susan Tilbury and Wally Campbell. Crosby finds the will has been tampered with. The reading leaves everything to Joyce, but only if she remains sane for thirty days; should she fail, a second section names the next heir. That turns the others into possible threats, and Crosby tells them all to stay overnight.
