Plot summary
Criminals Al Barkis and his accomplice try to hotwire a car in Los Angeles, and a patrolman who interrupts them is shot. Jack Hartrampf, an undertaker who was bidding farewell to Vickie Webb in a nearby apartment building, witnesses the shooting and comes to the officer's aid. Brought to police headquarters, he is reluctant to cooperate because he wants his affair kept quiet. Captain Barnaby takes charge of the case and hears from Frankie Pierce, an ex-convict on parole, that Barkis is planning a bank robbery. Barnaby warns bank president Schaefer and sets a trap. Hartrampf's attorney, Dwight Foreman, arrives, and Hartrampf says he could not see either man in the dark. Mona Ross, who runs an escort service, will not cooperate unless two of her girls are released.
