Walter Hampden

Biography

Walter Hampden was an American actor and theater manager who trained in England and finished his studies at NYU Poly in 1900. He established himself on Broadway in Shakespearean parts and as Cyrano de Bergerac, a role he returned to from 1923 to 1936. In 1925 he became actor-manager of the Colonial Theatre, which was renamed Hampden's Theatre until 1931. After a few silent films, his sound film career began in 1939 with The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), playing the archdeacon. He went on to supporting roles, including the master of ceremonies in All About Eve (1950) and the father of William Holden and Humphrey Bogart in Sabrina (1954). He hosted the radio series Great Scenes from Great Plays, appeared in early television dramas, and played Macbeth on TV in 1949. His last role was King Louis XI in The Vagabond King (1956).
