Hedda Hopper
Biography
Hedda Hopper was an American actress and gossip columnist who started out in Broadway choruses and toured with DeWolf Hopper's theater company. Born Elda Furry in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, she won the lead in a road tour of the play The Country Boy, then began acting in silent films in 1915 and became known for playing society women, as in Virtuous Wives (1918). She moved to Hollywood in 1923 as a contract player for Louis B. Mayer Pictures, appearing in more than 120 movies over 23 years. As her screen work slowed in the mid-1930s, she turned to journalism, and her column Hedda Hopper's Hollywood debuted in 1938, drawing more than 35 million readers. She also hosted her own radio programs and a 1960 television special, wrote two autobiographies, and appeared as herself in Sunset Boulevard (1950) and The Patsy (1964).
