Lucile Watson

Biography

Lucile Watson was a Canadian stage and film actress who built a long career largely in the United States, where she became known for playing formidable dowagers. Born in Quebec and raised in Ottawa as the daughter of a British Army officer, she went against his wishes and traveled to New York City, training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Broadway was her mainstay, with roles in 39 plays, among them His Bridal Night in 1916, No More Ladies in 1934, and The Bat in 1953. Her most acclaimed performance was as Fanny Farrelly in Lillian Hellman's Watch on the Rhine, staged on Broadway in 1941, and she repeated the part on screen with her co-star Paul Lukas, which brought her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She died in 1962.
