Plot summary
Lieutenant Janet Davidson leads a unit of Army nurses bound for Hawaii in the early days of World War II. When the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor, their ship is rerouted to the Philippines, and survivors from another vessel come aboard, among them Lieutenant Olivia D'Arcy, whose manner irritates the other nurses. Lieutenant Joan O'Doul, engaged to two men at once, draws the attention of a nervous marine called Kansas. At Christmas the nurses and soldiers hold a party, and Davidson, who disliked Lieutenant John Summers at first, finds herself warming to him. Manila is declared an open city, and the ship puts in at Bataan, where Davidson and Captain "Ma" McGregor tend a flood of wounded with dwindling supplies.

- Screenwriter Allan Scott was first asked to make a two-reel film for the Red Cross; with Eleanor Roosevelt's help in Washington he met nurses rescued from Corregidor at Walter Reed Hospital.
- So Proudly We Hail! was one of several films portraying the Philippines campaign and the Angels of Bataan, and at its release the real nurses in Bataan were still being held as prisoners of war.
- Macdonald Carey and Joel McCrea were reportedly meant to star at one stage, and Paulette Goddard reportedly had the script rewritten so her role was as prominent as Claudette Colbert's.
- Paramount took extra care with the film after Cry Havoc, an unsuccessful play about nurses on the Bataan peninsula, was much criticized for its inaccuracies, seeking approval from the War Department and military and nursing advisers.
