Plot summary
Old New York in the Gay Nineties: the rest of the city grew up into bustles and balloon sleeves, while the Bowery grew younger, louder and rowdier, the liveliest mile on the face of the globe. Its saloons and bookmakers are the setting, and the men the street produced are the subject.
Raoul Walsh directed the pre-code comedy drama for 20th Century Pictures, scripted by Michael L. Simmons. Wallace Beery plays Chuck Connors, George Raft plays Steve Brodie, Jackie Cooper plays Swipes McGurk and Fay Wray plays Lucy Calhoun, with George Walsh as John L. Sullivan and Lucille Ball uncredited. The running time is 92 minutes.

- Director Raoul Walsh later wrote in his autobiography Each Man in His Time that directing Wallace Beery and George Raft on the film was like trying to keep the peace between a lion and a tiger; their professional jealousy faded and they became good friends.
- There was talk that Clark Gable, Wallace Beery's fellow MGM contract player, would take the part that went to George Raft.
- The Bowery was the first film produced by Twentieth Century Pictures, which merged with Fox Film Corporation two years later to form Twentieth Century-Fox.
- Fay Wray, who plays Lucy Calhoun, was the leading lady in 11 films in 1933, among them the original version of King Kong.
- Director Raoul Walsh had made a Bowery film before: his 1915 Regeneration, shot on location there, was the first full-length gangster movie.
