Plot summary
In Chicago in 1929, the federal investigator Eliot Ness works to fight the gangster Al Capone, the city's underworld kingpin. Ness decides to put together a special team of law enforcement officers. He wants men who are reliable, dedicated and honest, and the squad is assembled from officers he judges to be incorruptible. The team's purpose is to bring Capone down. It becomes known as The Untouchables.

- Robert Stack said the lead in the Untouchables pilot was first offered to Van Heflin, who turned it down, then to Van Johnson, who accepted but was advised against it by his wife. When Stack took the part, his costumes had already been fitted for Van Johnson.
- Desi Arnaz optioned Eliot Ness's book about fighting Al Capone and turned it into a two-part Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse episode. Westinghouse paid $200,000 for it but it cost $400,000, and Arnaz accepted the shortfall to get higher production values and stars like Robert Stack and Neville Brand.
- The network wanted a narrator other than columnist Walter Winchell, but Desi Arnaz insisted on using him because, he said, "he was the period."
- Robert Stack based his Eliot Ness on a composite of three men he called the bravest he ever met: war hero Audie Murphy, his former Navy roommate Buck Mazza, and the stuntman Carey Loftin.
- Four days after The Untouchables aired, ABC offered Desilu $3,620,000 to make 32 episodes of a series about it; ABC and Desilu each held 35 percent, with Robert Stack and other outside interests holding the rest.
