Plot summary
A girl and her father stop for gas one night in 1955 in Little Creek, a small town in New Mexico. The girl walks the empty main street, meets a local boy, and the two watch a column of light descend from the sky. Twenty-five years on, Wayne serves as the town's deputy marshal, and the countryside around Little Creek is troubled by cattle found mutilated. Jennifer, a scientist from California running a geology project nearby, argues with him about the cause. Wayne grew up in Little Creek and joined the police; Jennifer went back to California and joined her father's company, though she says she always felt pulled back. They feel an attraction that seems familiar, as if they share some bond they cannot name.
