Plot summary
After the Civil War, Fort Invincible guards a mountain pass in the New Mexico Territory against Apache raiders. The Apache cut off the fort's water and overran the garrison. Captain Richard Lance arrives with a patrol and captures Tucsos, the Apache leader; his scout urges him to shoot the man, but Lance will not kill a prisoner. At 5th Cavalry headquarters, the colonel orders Lt. William Holloway to lead the escort taking Tucsos to a larger post and keeps Lance behind to defend the fort. Holloway is killed and Tucsos goes free. The soldiers, unaware of the colonel's order, blame Lance, thinking he chose the mission because he and Holloway both courted Cathy Eversham, an officer's daughter. She shares that belief and ends their relationship. Lance then assembles a band of misfit troopers to hold the ruins of Fort Invincible.
