Plot summary
Frank Brand is a ruthless outlaw who leads a band of killers. Brand and his gang rob the bank in the town where Sean Kilpatrick serves as sheriff, and during the robbery Kilpatrick's wife and son are murdered. The killings drive Kilpatrick, a pacifist, to abandon everything he has stood for; he wants revenge on Brand for the murders of his wife and son, and he wants the gang dead. His hunt for the outlaws carries him across the border into Mexico. There his counterpart Gutierrez, a noble Mexican sheriff, challenges the pursuit. Gutierrez cares only about carrying out the law, not about vengeance.

- The Deadly Trackers began filming as Riata, written and directed by Samuel Fuller from his own novel, with Richard Harris and Bo Hopkins starring. Production was halted mid-shoot and then restarted with a new director and cast; Harris was the only original cast member to come back.
- According to his costar Rod Taylor, Richard Harris hated Samuel Fuller's script and walked out on the original production of Riata, the version Fuller was making.
- The film's score was cobbled together using musical outtakes from other movies, and the picture was finished at all only through Richard Harris's relentless drive.
- Once Rod Taylor signed on, he joined the rewrite of the film, adding scenes to flesh out his villainous character; he was a member of the Screenwriters Guild.
