Mabel Albertson
Biography
Mabel Albertson was an American actress who worked across television, film, stage and radio, best known for playing Phyllis Stephens, Darrin's interfering mother, on the sitcom Bewitched. Born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, she came from a show business family: her mother was a stock actress and her younger brother was the actor Jack Albertson. She studied at the New England School of Speech and Expression and began performing at 13, playing piano behind palm trees, before joining the Pasadena Playhouse. She played the mother of Jack Benny on his television series and, between 1972 and 1973, Paul Lynde's mother-in-law on The Paul Lynde Show. Her films included Forever, Darling (1956), The Long, Hot Summer (1958), Don't Give Up the Ship (1959), On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970) and What's Up, Doc? (1972). She also wrote for radio programs and appeared on Broadway in The Egg (1962) and Xmas in Las Vegas (1965).
