Plot summary

Charlotte Bronn leaves a Massachusetts state mental hospital after a year and returns to her husband Arnold, a college professor, and to the house she owns, where her stepmother Inez and stepsister Joan live with them. Arnold sees no reason for anything to change because of her return. A boarder, Dr. Jake Diamond, has a room there during a temporary assignment at Arnold's college, hospitality Arnold offered to please a soon-to-retiring department head whose job he wants. At breakfast Inez tells Charlotte what to eat and what to wear. Arnold sleeps on a library couch, and when Charlotte asks him to return to their room he tells her that Dr. Collins thinks she needs more time by herself. Charlotte has no memory of the fit of jealousy in which she was told she attacked Joan.
